At one time Brands Hatch was among the greatest circuits in the world sharing the UK F1 tour with Silverstone. Politics and a rise in safety requirements saw Silverstone take over completely and now Brands Hatch is forced to play second fiddle. That is not to say that there is anything wrong with the place - far from it, it has everything a competitor or spectator would need although it does sometimes feel a little shoddy in comparison.
The circuit itself is pretty much untouched from its F1 days although the large gravel traps have largely been replaced with tarmac most notibly at Paddock Hill where it was not unusual for cars to be seen flying off towards the barrier. Graham Hill bend has seem modifications to add narrow gravel traps on the inside to discourage drivers from ditchhooking or taking shortcuts.
The paddock is effectively split in two at here with the vast majority of competitors placed in the large open area that sits below Hailwood hill, entry to the pitlane is through a pair of rather narrow tunnels underneath Paddock Hill Bend. While the open area might be a bit exposed there are water and power points all around the site making it much easier to run a temporary garage than at other venues.
